Lucy Hay

Lucy HayMy education took place in my home country Scotland. I have a Doctorate in Pharmaceutics from University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and my Post Graduate qualification in teaching from the University of Edinburgh. I currently am teaching science at St. Columbas School in Kilmacolm, Scotland. I previously taught Biology as well as coached field hockey at the North Shore Country Day School and that is how I began my association with the school and summer programs.

This will be my thirteenth summer at North Shore. I am the Expedition Camp Director and Program Director for the Day Camp. I helped create the Expedition Camp program with Cindy Hooper twelve years ago and have returned each summer from my home in Scotland to help improve the program and make the experience for the campers an enriching one. My three children have “grown up” at camp and through their experiences I have developed a deep understanding of the true value of the camp experience for children.

Through my experiences and my children’s I have grown to value the lasting friendships that camp creates. Camp is a social place where shared experiences help foster bonds between all members of the camp community. Celebrating daily successes in activities like swimming and rock climbing, helping those in need of an extra hand, and working together to solve problems are all part of life at camp for campers, staff and directors. Each day I walk about and see the relationships strengthen between children, children and adults, and adults themselves. This sense of “belonging” is what brings campers and staff back each summer. It is what draws me and my family back as well.

Dealing with a variety of age-groups each summer is an interesting endeavor for the staff. Children ages 3 to 14 are able to participate in the camp experience and try new and sometimes challenging activities. I enjoy seeing campers master the rock climbing wall and ask for greater challenges. The lakefront program tests campers each day. They learn boating and safety skills but also how to negotiate the weather and the tremendous body of water that lies before them. By relying on the adults to guide them, children gain confidences and knowledge on how to cope and manage situations. These qualities will serve them well as they move through life.
