I graduated from Miami University (Ohio) with an undergraduate degree in business. After starting a family of 4, I began substitute teaching in my children’s preschool, and knew I had found my passion. I spent the next 8 years teaching and studying at National Louis University. I currently hold a Masters in the Art of Teaching (K- 8) and a Certificate of Advanced Study in Special Education for K- 12. For the last two years, I have been a 3rd/4th grade Special Education teacher for Hubbard Woods School here in Winnetka.
This will be my 4th year as Director of the Little Explorers program of North Shore’s summer camp and I love it! The opportunity to work, play and learn from young children during the summer helps me maintain a balance and grounds me for all the work I do with older children (including my own teenagers). Young children have a unique way of reminding all of us to “stop and smell the roses” as we do everyday on our walk from the drop off to our home base.
My greatest joy of working in this camp is the joy I witness on the campers faces as they learn, explore and accomplish. For example, my campers are empowered as gardeners throughout the summer and take great pride in watching their garden grow. It isn’t always easy for a young child to separate from their family on their first few days of a new camp. I know I have made a difference in the life of my campers when they are eager to come to camp, and for the last two years, many of my campers extend their time or add more days into their schedule. That is when I know the program is successful and most importantly my campers are happy.
