Cristy Herndon
I graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a degree in Elementary Education. I am a second grade teacher at North Shore Country Day School, and I am also the Director of the After School Program.
I have worked at North Shore Country Day Camp for 11 years. In that time I have been an Arts and Crafts instructor, a Senior Counselor, a Mariner Guide, and the Lake Front Director. I have continued to work at camp for so many years because I love the community. It feels very much like a family. We actually have a lot of siblings that work at camp together. Both of my younger brothers have worked there, and I was fortunate enough to have one of my brothers as my co-Mariner guide. It was good for the campers to see a brother and sister get along so well. Families that work well together are good role models to campers on how they should value their relationships with their siblings.
I have formed valuable relationships some of my campers and their families, and I have made lasting friendships with my co-workers. This year I had two previous campers come visit me in my class room. They are in high school and have not been able to attend camp for a couple years now because they are too old. However, on their day off during the school year, they came to see me. I was very touched because it proved to me that the relationships I form with my campers each year last much longer than one summer.
