Carrie Smey
I am one of the Day Camp Directors for North Shore Country Day Summer Programs. During the school year I am a second grade teacher at The Latin School of Chicago. I have been teaching for the past eleven years, and hold a Masters in Education from National-Louis University, in Chicago, Illinois. My undergraduate degree is in Elementary Education and Spanish from Butler University, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
This will be my 16th summer working for North Shore Country Day Summer Programs. I feel as though my camp journey has come full circle since beginning there 16 years ago. I have had many positions at camp over the years, including: Junior Counselor, Senior Counselor, Arts and Crafts Instructor, and Day Camp Director.
Camp is my summer family. I return each year because I love the people I work with at camp. It is a happy place to be in the summer. I enjoy working with my colleagues, the campers, and their families. We always begin the summer as if we haven’t been away from each other all year long. My camp story is unique. I met my husband at North Shore Day Camp fifteen years ago. He was the archery instructor and I was a camp counselor. We have been married for 8 years now, and have two young girls. Our oldest attended her first summer of camp last year as part of the 3-year old program. She loved the experiences she had, and I loved that she made new friends, tried new things, and was taught by experienced, caring teachers. She is really looking forward to attending “big kid camp” this summer!
My most memorable experiences at camp were working with the campers in the pool. I think it is amazing to watch the progress that can be made in one summer. I remember watching kids in my group go from being afraid to get in the water, to learning to swim, and being water-confident.
