Alicia Aydt

Alicia Aydt I started working at North Shore Country Day Camp the summer after my senior year of high school. One of my friends had worked here and suggested that I apply because it is such a great place to work. Fifteen years later, I am still working at this great place, and couldn’t agree more about the wonderful working environment that it possesses!

As camp has evolved, I have evolved, too. I began my summers as a senior day camp counselor. A few summers later, I created and taught the creative play activity for 4-6 year old campers. Lastly upon graduation from college, I became a day camp director – a position I currently still hold. Naturally, I have evolved in my personal life as well. I obtained a Bachelors degree in Education from Butler University and a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction from National Louis University. In the “off-season,” I am a third grade teacher at Winkelman School. I also assist the Summer Programs Director and do private tutoring.

Why 15 years of dedication to camp you may ask? Is it the joyous sound of children’s voices captured in the summer breeze as it blows throughout the campus? Yes. Is it the traditions and familiarity of camp and the relationships that have developed from it? Yes. Is it the opportunity to work outdoors at a job that just doesn’t quite feel like “work?” Yes.

My various jobs at camp have been rewarding in their own sense. From the pride of a camper learning how to swim to the proud parent watching their child happily embrace the camp experience, each position has given me difference feelings of joy in a job well done. Qualities of camp that have been maintained over the years include: accommodating the various needs of children, good parent communication, and a safe environment to play, explore, learn, and have fun.

North Shore Country Day Camp has provided for me connections that last well beyond the summer months. I have formed close, lasting connections with not only staff members, but families as well. Families whose children I was once a counselor for now have those same children returning as counselors themselves. My greatest successes from working at camp are those opportunities where I truly know I made a difference in the life of a child. I have experienced those opportunities in so many different ways in my fifteen years here. Although I was never a camper here, I look forward to having my daughter attend camp when she is old enough. I am excited to see what the next fifteen years will bring for me, for camp, and for my family.
